Art Goes to School of Delaware Valley (AGTS-DV) is a non-profit, volunteer organization of over 750 members, who bring art appreciation classes to nearly 155,000 school children in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Art Goes to School is organized into separate chapters in more than 50 school districts throughout the Delaware Valley.
- AGTS volunteers bring art reproductions into the classrooms and make fine art accessible to local students.
- AGTS-DV provides workshops and lectures to train volunteers.
Art plays an important role in developing a child’s imagination and in appreciating the works of a wide cross-section of peoples and cultures. AGTS volunteers use reproductions that run the gamut from cave to modern art. European, American, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern, African, and Aboriginal works are included in AFTS presentations. There are over 900 different prints by more than 300 different artists in the AGTS collection of prints.
- In June, every AGTS chapter receives a portfolio of art reproductions for use during the following school year. These portfolios are rotated among the chapters annually.
- Each chapter sets its own meeting times, presentation policies and school visitation schedules.
The goal of each AGTS chapter is to:
- Promote the visual arts to school children in an informal, informative, fun-filled hour; and encourage the children to “look, listen, and feel” the art.
- Help develop the children’s imaginations and their appreciation of the art works created by a people from various cultures and times in history.
- Nurture critical thinking skills through discussions about the visual arts
- Make a contribution to our community
- Have fun, learn about art and art history and make friends with others who share an interest in art and education.
People of all ages who enjoy working with children and are enthusiastic about art become Art Goes to School volunteers. |
