Student Activities at Owen J. Roberts Middle School

After-school PE Make-ups - The fitness room will be open after school 3-4 times per marking period for any students who need PE make-ups or just want to come in and use the equipment. Permission forms are available from any Physical Education Teacher.
Art Club - Students explore a variety of tools, processes, and materials and construct highly individualized works of art. The Art Club meets after school throughout the school year. Contact Mrs. McGinnis for additional information.Best Buddies  - The Best Buddies program helps foster one-to-one friendships between students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Best Buddies helps to create an inclusive middle school climate for students early on in their educational development. Contact Mrs. Dean or Mrs. Hoyt for more information.
Board & Game Club - This club meets Tuesdays after school in February and March. Participants play anything from Pokemon, to Monopoly, and Uno. Open to any interested students. See Mr. Hess for details.
Chorus Fest - This is a small group of auditioned students who participate in a large chorus consisting of other auditioned students from District XII. Contact Mrs. Nixdorf for more information.
The Color Guard
is open to any student in 7th and 8th grade.  Rehearsals begin in the summer and continue through September on Tuesdays/Thursdays after school.  The Color Guard performs with the Marching Band.  We also offer an indoor Color Guard when funding and gym space allows.  This usually runs from January-May. Contact Mr. Hess for more information.
Dances – Throughout the school year, PTA sponsors a variety of school dances on Friday evenings. Middle school dances are well supervised and provide students with an opportunity to have a lot of fun while socializing with their peers.
 
EnvirothonThe Chester County Conservation District sponsors this annual environmental educational program with the Chester County Parks and Recreation Department, hosting it at Hibernia County Park.  Each year, students from public, private, parochial, and home schools, grades 1-12, celebrate months of research, exploration, and preparation with an enjoyable outdoor competition and means of learning. OJRMS Envirothon meets to study and participate in outdoor experiences that help students get to know the great forces of nature-wildlife, aquatics, forestry, soil, and current issues. Each 5 member team rotates through stations and works as a team through a test on each of the subjects. A competition is held in the Spring each year, and we begin our after-school practices starting in January. Students who are not in the normally scheduled school day club are still allowed to participate and meet with us for our after-school meetings! Contact Mrs. Hinkley for more information.
Leo Club - The Owen J. Roberts Middle School LEO club is a student service club offered to both 7th and 8th graders. It is sponsored by the Coventry Lions. Our mission statement is to provide the youth of our school with an opportunity for development and contribution of leadership and service skills, both individually and collectively, as responsible members of our local, national and international community. The group meets during FLEX periods and after school at times. In addition, members participate in various projects outside of school on weeknights and weekends. is open to any student enrolled in the Band Class.  Performances include the Annual OJR Cavalcade of Bands and an OJR high school football game.  Band camp runs in August and then after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in September. Contact Mr. Hess for more information
The Musical & Musical Prep
Each fall OJRMS Theater hosts "Musical Prep" where students of any experience level can come and learn the necessary skills to audition for the musical! Once auditions are held at the end of Musical Prep, students in the cast will spend the winter getting ready for opening night in March. For more information, please see Ms. Frasca or Mrs. Williams. National Junior Honor Society
NJHS is a co-curricular activity that actively supports the educational goals of our school.  We create opportunities to involve our chapter members in significant learning experiences following national guidelines linked with significant input to reflect local educational standards.  Honor Society is inclusively open to all students who choose to apply themselves consistently and consequently meet the five established criteria of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Students must earn three out of four marking periods of Distinguished Honor Roll in 7th grade to be considered for this club. Students will participate only as an 8th grader. Odyssey of the Mind is the world's largest problem-solving competition.  Students must make use of their full complement of intellectual and creative thinking skills to solve a vast array of problems.  Contact Chris Palochak can also be contacted by email CPalochak@ojrsd.com, for more information, click here.Pops Band
This ensemble is by audition only.  Auditions will be held in October and are open to any student in 7th and 8th grade.  Rehearsals run from October-May and are held every Tuesday and Thursday after school.  Performances include the Winter and Spring Concerts, local Jazz Festivals, and visits to the OJR elementary schools. Contact Mr. Hess for more information.
Reading Olympics
is a great activity for any student who loves to read!  Our club shares the responsibility for reading certain titles and then competes in the Chester County Reading Olympics Competition one evening in the spring.  It is a fun night where we all celebrate our love of books! Mrs. Burnheimer is the advisor.
Spelling Bee - is available for those students who express a strong interest in spelling. Tryouts occur depending upon the number of students interested in the Spelling Bee. After school sessions meet once a week from the end of November until our school competition which is held towards the end of January. The winner of the Owen J. Roberts Middle School Spelling Bee qualifies for the Chester County Spelling Bee, for a chance to represent our school in the national competition. Mr. Hoagland is the advisor of the club.
Student Council - Involvement in Student Council is voluntary and open to all middle school students. Student Council representatives serve in a leadership role in the school community and are guided by the Student Council Advisors and the 8th grade Leadership Team. Student Council communicates peer feedback to administrators for school improvement and coordinates school-wide community service projects, spirit days, after-school activities, and the 8th grade Farewell Dance. Intramural tennis is for beginning, intermediate and advanced tennis players.  It will be held after school on the OJR tennis courts most Tuesdays and Thursdays in May.  Learn how to serve, keep score and hit volleys and overheads.  Players will need sneakers, a water bottle, and a tennis racquet in order to play.  Contact Mrs. Hinkley for more information.
Tri-M Music Honor Society - This is an honor society for gifted music students.  Students must have good grades as well as be recommended by their music teachers. Contact - Mrs. Nixdorf.
Varsity Singers - is an auditioned group of 7th & 8th graders who are enrolled in choir for the school year. Students in Varsity Singers have the opportunity to rehearse more demanding music and partake in gigs around the school district and community. Some of these events include caroling around the OJR Elementary Schools and singing at an annual Reading Royals hockey game.
Yearbook Club
Students in Yearbook Club meet at various times throughout the year to work on the design and editing of the yearbook itself.  We meet as a whole group a few times after school in the fall, and then we split up tasks.  I meet with individual students and pairs of students continuously throughout the year.  Aside from meetings, students stay after school to take pictures at various events (sporting games, music concerts).  Students also take pictures at events during the school day (author assemblies, etc.)  In the winter (January through March), students will work on layout and design or edit content. April and May are dedicated to organizing book delivery so that Yearbook distribution day runs smoothly at the end of the school year! Contact Mrs. Armstrong for more information.

Builders Club meets during school club periods, but we also do some things outside of school.  Builders Club is a community service club sponsored by the Pottstown Kiwanis Club.  We raise funds and do community service for different organizations both within the school and outside the community.  No advisor at this time.
Robotics
An after-school club designed for students to explore the world of robotics through teamwork and competition. Each year, in August, new challenges are issued for teams that are based on a specific topic. Students interact with each other cooperatively to design a robot which can successfully complete specific tasks for the given challenge. No advisor at this time.
